CTRM
While many dream of flying high, one Malaysian company has taken that aspiration quite literally, soaring to impressive altitudes in the aerospace manufacturing industry. Composites Technology Research Malaysia, better known as CTRM, has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the early 1990s. Today, it stands as a shining example of Malaysian innovation and resilience in the global aerospace industry.
Background
CTRM's journey began with a dream of flight. In 1990, the company sent 35 Malaysian technical interns to Australia to learn the art of manufacturing lightweight composite aircraft. Their first project? The Eagle 150B, a two-seater light aircraft that would become the foundation of CTRM's expertise.
Fast forward to today, and CTRM has spread its wings far beyond those early days. The company now produces components for some of the world's most advanced commercial and military aircraft, including Airbus models like the A320, A350, and A380.
Turbulence and Triumph
But success didn't come without its share of turbulence. In 2013, CTRM hit a rough patch. The company was struggling to deliver products on time, putting its reputation and contracts at risk. Enter Shamsuddin Mohamed Yusuf, who took over as CEO in 2016 with the daunting task of turning things around.
Shamsuddin and his team implemented a new strategy focusing on the three pillars of success in aerospace manufacturing: quality, delivery, and cost. They invested in cutting-edge technology and even built a new high-tech facility to boost their capabilities.
They have also approached several agencies under MITI, like NAICO, to solicit support and assistance. Through that support, NAICO has helped identify the AEEIF grant.
MIDF Financial Support
This is where MIDF entered the picture, providing crucial support that helped CTRM soar to new heights. With a timely grant from MIDF, CTRM was able to fund some of the costs associated with bidding for new projects. This financial boost made CTRM's bids more competitive, opening doors to exciting new opportunities.
The results speak for themselves. CTRM secured a major contract for the Airbus A220 project, worth a whopping 853 million ringgit. But that's not all – the company has also been recognized by Airbus as a "super tier supplier" and received the prestigious Accredited Member award in the aerostructure category.
With MIDF's help, this Malaysian company has truly taken flight, proving that the sky's the limit for those who dare to dream big.
